About Road to 2050

The Road to 2050 for Canada’s grain sector is an initiative of the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) that provides a guide for federal government programming to enable the grain sector to sustainably intensify production to feed a growing world population while addressing climate change and ensuring the long-term economic prosperity of grain farms.

Canadian grain farmers and their production practices continue to provide an important solution as Canada seeks to contribute to reducing net carbon emissions. As the national voice for Canada’s grain farmers, GGC represents over 65,000 cereal, oilseed, and pulse producers through our 14 grower groups. GGC advocates for federal policy that supports the competitiveness and profitability of grain growers across Canada.

Policy Recommendations

For decades, grain farmers have been at the forefront of sustainable farming, making Canada a leader in producing grain with some of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. This success not only shows their dedication to preserving our environment but also benefits our biodiversity, water, and soil health. As the federal government works towards its environmental goals, Grain Growers of Canada has laid out a roadmap filled with practical solutions to chart the path forward.

To maintain a competitive edge, Canada must increase its investment in agricultural research and development. This includes funding for public and private research into new crop varieties, agronomic practices, and machinery, to enhance the sector’s sustainability and productivity. These new innovations will enable Canadian grain farms to thrive while adapting to the effects of climate change.

  • Maintain and increase financial support for public and private research and development.
  • Expand public and private plant breeding research.
  • Increase research on agronomic practices.
  • Broaden machinery research.
  • Continued expansion of rural cellular networks and broadband.

To keep Canadian grain growers at the forefront of sustainable agriculture, it is critical for the government to not only highlight their vital contributions to environmental stewardship but also to bolster support through expanded funding and eligibility for climate programs, innovative tax incentives, and enhanced agronomic support. By recognizing and investing in the sector’s potential for carbon sequestration, ecosystem preservation, and adoption of cutting-edge technologies, the government can pave the way for a greener, more resilient agricultural future.

  • Expand eligibility criteria and funding for current climate programs
  • Develop tax incentives to bridge financial gaps between old and new technologies.
  • Re-investment in provincial agronomy extension services.
  • Support crop commissions programming across Canada to facilitate knowledge transfer.

Reliable farm level data ensures that future policy decisions are based on consistent, accurate, and comprehensive metrics . Addressing the on-farm data gap will enhance our understanding of current agricultural practices and challenges, enabling targeted policy support. Building trust with grain farmers by prioritizing privacy and anonymity is paramount to encourage participation in this initiative.

  • Development of a data management strategy
